What is Maternity Laxity (Diastasis Recti)?

What is Maternity Laxity (Diastasis Recti)?

  • During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles (especially the rectus abdominis muscles) and surrounding tissues stretch.
  • This is observed as loosening, sagging, and muscle separation in the abdominal skin and muscle structure.
  • It is generally seen in postpartum women and can lead to aesthetic or functional problems in the abdominal region.

Symptoms

  • An opening or bulging in the midline of the anterior abdominal wall.
  • A sensation of a gap in the midline when flexing the abdominal muscles.
  • Weakness in trunk stability, lower back, and back pain.
  • Rarely, aesthetic discomfort (sagging or looseness) in the abdominal region.

Treatment Methods

  • Exercise and Physical Therapy:
  • Special Pilates and core exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles.
  • Support Corsets and Elastic Bandages:
  • Supports the muscles, especially in the first months after childbirth.
  • Surgery (Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty):
  • If the muscle separation is very pronounced or if there is skin sagging, the muscles and skin can be restored with surgery.

💡 In Summary: Maternity laxity is the loosening or separation of the abdominal muscle and skin tissue after pregnancy; it usually improves with exercise, but aesthetic surgery may sometimes be required.
